don’t rain on my parade

This song has gone through a lot of changes over the past few years. It used to be a real slow one with totally different chords but I recently re-worked into a semi-nod to REM, at least sonically. The song title has been around for over 10 years so it’s good to check it off the list.

Lyrically, it’s about how the weather absolutely wrecks my brain and when it rains it literally messes up my day. I liked the idea about how little things build up to cause problems as I think we can all relate to those kind of circumstances even if we can’t all point to neurological damage caused by something most people consider benign like weather. Maybe we all have our little things like rain.

I don’t necessarily love everything I record but I really like this one and wish I had drums and someone who knew how to play guitar on it. Someday. For now it’s just me making noise.

Also, I love the album cover. It makes me laugh a lot. I took that picture a dozen years ago when I used to work often from Helios (RIP) in Raleigh’s Glenwood South.

Lyrics:

It’s the littlest things, not the big ones
That eventually do you in
The small things that you disregard
That matter in the end

Please, don’t rain
On my parade
Please, don’t rain
On my parade

I may bend and I may shake
But know I won’t break
From the tiny drops that build up
Til the damn that had enough

Please, don’t rain
On my parade
Please, don’t rain
On my parade

Death by a thousand cuts
Until I bleed out
It’s those little things you disregard
That eventually do you in

Please, don’t rain
On my parade
Please, don’t rain
On my parade
Please, don’t rain
On my parade
Please, don’t rain
On my parade
