flipbooks

As far as I know it’s the only song that starts out with a lyric about roadkill.

At its essence, “flipbooks” is about being OK with being weird. When I was in high school, I used to draw and cartoon quite a lot and started making a ton of flip books involving some unfortunate events occurring to the main characters. It was like a low-fi version of Roadrunner and Coyote with more gore. At first, I was a little scared to show people what was I was working on as I worried people would think I was a lunatic. Hence, the “So…welcome to my world” lyric in the chorus.

Anyways…I had dozens of flip books (I was prolific) in a box that I carried around with me and for some reason people wanted to check them out to get a laugh before class. It was almost like an ice breaker for me. The song has elements of letting go and letting your inner weirdness out for the rest of the world to enjoy.

No alternate tunings on this one and has the occasional hints of early REM at the end (I’ve been listening to “Fables of the Reconstruction” a lot lately).

Drums added by Bob Witchger really brought this one alive.

Lyrics:

Roadkill and car crashes
Maybe best keep this one to myself
Trapped in my own head
And I could never get out

Single frame and little moments
An escape from a world I couldn’t trust
It was a sketch and a joke
And somehow you didn’t think I crossed the line

So welcome to my world
One that I’m scared to reveal
All I wanted was to make you laugh
It was everything, everything, everything

Turn a page and another
Til it all comes back together
Where does this all come from?
I’ll be damned if I know

Used to wear my heart on my sleeve
But that shirt is tattered and worn
Maybe some part of me was crazy
But aren’t we are all in some ways

So welcome to my world
One that I’m scared to reveal
All I wanted was to make you laugh
It was everything, everything, everything

So welcome to my world
One that I’m scared to admit
All I wanted was to make you laugh
It was everything, everything, everything
It was everything, everything, everything

What’s in them flipbooks?
(An illusion of moving on)
What’s in them flipbooks?
(An illusion of moving on)
What’s in them flipbooks?
(An illusion of moving on)
What’s in them flipbooks?
(An illusion of moving on)
