maybe

This song is about alien abduction. Sorta.

First line about scuppernong wine is a shoutout to my high school English teacher, Mrs Talley. Besides English class not sure I’ve ever had scuppernong wine but I liked the number of syllables. Beyond alien abduction, this song is about how events that happen shape you and possibly explain why you are the way you are.

This song started out as a chill little acoustic number before I started throwing layers on it. “maybe” features drumming from the always great, Bob Witchger. I dig all the watery effects with electric guitar at the end. For guitar nerds this is another one in open D tuning and is sort of a cousin to ‘Take Care’ as the guitar was written at the same time as that tune.

Tuning: Open D, capo 2…so Open E really

Lyrics:

Scuppernong wine to drown it out
Easier to give up than let you in
I’ll hide behind my favorite walls
And keep building them higher and higher

I can’t trust enough to open up
Easier to say that I don’t care
I’ll hide behind my silly faces
So you can’t tell that I’m a frightened child

Maybe that’s why I am this way
Not sure what you want me to say except
Maybe, I’m this way

It’s harder now that I am thinking clearer
It’s harder now I’m looking a mirror
All those things that that I used to fear
Are closer now than they would appear

Maybe that’s why I am this way
Not sure what you want me to say except
Maybe, I’m this way
Maybe
Maybe
Maybe
Maybe?
